STEP 1
-Presentation of the architect

David Childs:

Born on April 1, 1941, Princeton, New Jersey, graduated from Yale University in 1963. His career as an architect began after completing a graduate degree from the Yale School of Art and Architecture in 1967. He began his career in Washington, D.C., when he joined the Pennsylvania Avenue Commission from 1968 to 1971. It could be argued that Childs’ first experiences in the Commission led the young architect to a lifelong domain in public architecture, city planning and politics behind construction and design: skills needed to achieve their goals. David Childs has been associated with SOM since 1971, initially working on projects in Washington, D.C. From 1975 to 1981 he was chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission involved in the 1976 Washington Mall Master Plan and the Constitution Gardens. He worked at the 1984 M Street building of the National Geographic Society and then at U.S.News and World Report headquarters, both in Washington, D.C. In 1984, David Childs had moved to New York City, where he has been working on SOM projects ever since. A portfolio of its projects highlights a series of buildings in New York City: Worldwide Plaza in 825 8th Avenue (1989); Bertelsmann Tower in Times Square (1990); Tower of Times Square in 7 Times Square (2004); Bear Stearns in 383 Madison Avenue (2001); AOL Time Warner Center in Columbus Circle (2004); and, of course, 7 World Trade Center (2006) and 1 World Trade Center (2014). The renovation of Moynihan station at the post office James A. Farley and 35 Hudson Yards are their last project for New York City.

“A great home is all about the context”

-My opinion

A person can see a house built with the best materials and with the greatest possible spaces, however, it doesn’t have to be the greatest house. The best possible house is the one we consider our home, where we feel security and comfort. A great house doesn’t have to be a wonder of architecture to count as a great house, simply has to meet the needs of the owner and provide protection. It’s more subjective, but if for you your house gives comfort and protection it’s a great house.

STEP 2

-Text

The text is presented to us as a small master class in introduction to architecture but with an approach to smaller generations. The text tries to call the young reader to the world of architecture describing what architecture is and what being an architect means so that when the young one is choosing a university career, the young reader will ask itself architecture is right for it because hou cannot study architecture without vocation.
